Now you can forget it!

Investing is emotional ya’ll.

You buy a thing,
then it might go down 😱
and the media will make you think we’re in “unprecedented times”
with the market “bottoming out” 📉
and the world is ending 😒

Like riding a roller coaster!

So how are you supposed to keep investing?

As Benjamin Graham (Warren Buffet’s mentor) said, “individuals who cannot master their emotions are ill-suited to profit from the investment process.”

Investing is about emotions.

And one way to master your emotions is to get off the ride.

  • Don’t stop investing!
  • But make a plan you can live with (i.e. pick your strategy)
    • Ours is passive investing into low-cost funds that track the market and broad sectors like technology & healthcare.
  • Invest.
  • Then stop looking at it.

The point of low-cost fund investing is to compound your money for 40 years. If the market dips today, it’s of little consequence.

For example, here’s VTI in the last 5 days:

We see a lot of red, an angry dip, and plenty of ups and downs.

Here’s VTI over it’s whole history:

It went from $57.79 to $237.19 in ~21 years.

Tracking every squiggle in the market will make you feel frantic & stressed and trigger all your fight or flight reactions. Remember when we talked about loss aversion? You have to zoom out.

Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 and go to Las Vegas.” — Paul Samuelson

Investing is about mastering your emotions. Our advice, set it and forget it.
